Shared Kubernetes Cost Allocation Worksheet
Allocate shared Kubernetes costs to teams
Use this worksheet to make an allocation policy explicit. Enter direct workload costs and separate, disjoint shared and idle pools for the same reporting period, currency and financial scope. The sample numbers are illustrative, not AWS prices or a measured cluster bill.
This tool does not connect to AWS, Kubecost or OpenCost. It calculates from the values you enter in your browser. No input values are submitted by the worksheet. Ordinary site analytics and consent settings still apply.
Direct costs
Use team costs before redistribution. Do not enter a fully loaded team total and add its shared costs again.

Separate pools and allocation policy
Do not add idle here if it is already included in your source totals. In particular, AWS split cost data can include a Pod's attributed unused-cost share. The worksheet cannot detect duplicate inputs.
How to interpret the result
Proportional allocation uses each team's direct cost as its weight. Equal allocation gives each team the same weight. Pools are allocated separately; leftover cents go to the largest fractional remainders, with ties resolved by input order. A zero-cost denominator is rejected for a nonzero proportional pool. Changing a policy redistributes cost; it does not reduce infrastructure spend.
The export records the entered period, scope, cost basis, currency label, policy and rounding method. No currency conversion occurs. A zero allocation difference establishes conservation of the entered total, not accuracy of your inputs, cloud telemetry coverage or agreement with your invoice.
Worked example and source boundaries
With direct costs 400.00, 250.00 and 150.00, the total direct pool is 800.00. Sharing 180.00 proportionally gives 90.00, 56.25 and 33.75. Team totals are 490.00, 306.25 and 183.75; keeping 180.00 idle with the platform gives 1,160.00 overall.
This worksheet is DevOpsDreams' accounting illustration, not an implementation of every detail of a vendor cost model. OpenCost's specification explains workload, shared and idle costs. AWS's split line-item dictionary explains allocated and unused costs. Read your source model before selecting inputs.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculate the actual cost of my Pods? No. Collect and validate workload costs using an appropriate tool or billing report before entering them.
Which sharing rule is correct? That is an organizational policy decision. Use a documented, agreed rule and keep enough source detail for teams to challenge it.
Can I use different currencies or dates together? No. Convert and align the inputs outside the worksheet first. The currency field labels the report only.
Does a lower team total mean a saving? No. Compare billable infrastructure or usage before and after a change, with the same cost basis and reliability requirements.
